Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has paid a glowing tribute to Taiwo Awoniyi following the striker’s move to Coventry City.

Awoniyi brought his four-year association with Forest to an end on Monday after completing a move to Frank Lampard’s side.

The Nigeria international joined the Premier League outfit from Bundesliga club Union Berlin in 2022 and played a key role in helping the Tricky Trees preserve their Premier League status during his debut season.

Awoniyi scored 11 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions in that campaign and went on to register 23 goals in 103 outings for Forest.

Despite his departure, Marinakis insisted that Awoniyi’s contribution to the club will not be forgotten, declaring that the forward will always hold a special place in Nottingham Forest’s history.

“Taiwo will always have a special place in the history of Nottingham Forest. He has been one of the defining figures in our journey and given our supporters moments of great joy that will never be forgotten,” he told the club’s official website.

“Throughout his time with us, Taiwo has shown great strength, determination and positivity, overcoming great challenges along the way.

“He embraced this Club from the first day and his passion and character are why he is so loved by everyone connected to Nottingham Forest.

“We thank Taiwo for everything he has given to this Club. He leaves with our gratitude, our respect and our very best wishes for the future. He will always be part of the Forest family and will always be welcomed home.”
